Choose which posts get pins with pin rules
Set what a new post gets by itself and how many pins, leave posts out with rules, and turn one post's pins off and on, for every blog or for one.
Pin rules decide which of your posts get pins without you asking, and how many. They never publish anything: every pin still waits for your approval in the review queue.
Open them in Settings, then Pin rules. A blog can also have rules of its own, in the Pin rules tab on its page.
For new posts
Under Pins by themselves, choose what a new post gets on its own:
- Images: image pins only.
- Videos: video pins only.
- Both: image pins and video pins.
- Nothing: new posts get no pins by themselves.
Then set the counts:
- Image pins per post: 0 to 10.
- Video pins per post: 0 to 3.
The counts are per Pinterest account. With two accounts and 3 image pins per post, a post gets up to 3 image pins on each account. The counts are a most: a post with fewer fitting designs gets fewer pins.
A new workspace starts with Both, 3 image pins and 1 video pin per post. Press Save new-post rules; the button stays greyed out until you change something. New posts follow the rules from then on.
Video pins and your plan
Under Video pins per post you see how many video pins your plan has left this month, for example "7 of 20 left this month", or "No monthly limit on video pins". When the month's video pins run out, a post waits for its video pins until the next month. See Plans, limits and the usage meter and Video pins.
Leave posts out, or make pins only for some
The Which posts get pins panel lists your rules. Press Add rule. On a phone it opens as a sheet from the bottom of the screen; on a computer, as a panel at the side.
- Under About, choose A category, A tag, Published after a day, Published before a day or A single post.
- Under What it does, choose Leave out or Only.
- Type the category or tag as it is named on your blog, or pick the day.
- If you have more than one blog, choose Every blog or one blog under Which blogs.
- Press Add rule.
Each rule shows in plain words, for example "Leave out the category Kitchen basics" or "Only posts published after 2026-01-31", with where it applies: "Every blog" or the blog's name.
Remove takes a rule away, and Undo in the message brings it back within 10 seconds. A workspace keeps at most 100 rules.
How rules work together
- A post turned off by hand never gets pins. See the next section.
- A post that matches any Leave out rule gets no pins.
- Once an Only rule applies to a blog, its posts get pins only when they match one of its Only rules.
- Categories and tags match whatever their case: "soup" and "Soup" are the same.
- A post without a publish date matches no date rule.
Turn one post's pins off and on
Some posts should not get pins: a sponsored post that has ended, a recipe you plan to rewrite, or a page that is not a post at all.
- Open Settings, then Pin rules, or the blog's Pin rules tab, and press Add rule.
- Under About, choose A single post.
- Under Post, type two letters or more of its title, for example "No-Knead", and pick the post from the list. Only posts whose pins are on show up.
- Press Turn off pins for this post.
Bloomtack confirms with "“No-Knead Sourdough for Busy Weeknights” gets no new pins until you turn it on again." The post now shows in the rules list as Leave out “No-Knead Sourdough for Busy Weeknights”, marked "One post, turned off by hand".
What happens to its pins:
- The post gets no new pins: not by itself, not from Generate pins, and Generate for all posts on the Posts screen passes over it.
- Pins already made for the post stay as they are, whether they wait in review, are scheduled or are published. If you do not want a pin that waits in review, skip it. See Approve and skip pins.
- If the post was still waiting for its pins, it keeps waiting until you turn it on again.
To turn it back on, find the post in the rules list and press Turn on. Bloomtack confirms with "Pins are on again for" and the post's title, and offers Undo. Turning a post on starts nothing by itself: if the post still waits for pins, Bloomtack makes them within a few minutes, following your pin rules. To ask for its missing pins yourself, press Generate pins on its row on the Posts screen.
A post left out by a rule for a category, tag or publish date gets pins again only when you remove or change that rule.
Rules for one blog
The Each blog panel says, for every blog, "Uses the rules above" or its own rules in a few words. Press a blog's name to open its Pin rules tab, or open the blog from Blogs and choose that tab.
- Under For new posts on this blog, choose Same as every blog or Own rules. With Own rules, set the kinds and counts and press Save this blog's rules.
- Going back to Same as every blog shows a message with Undo for 10 seconds.
- Which posts of this blog get pins has its own Add rule for rules that apply to this blog only.
For example, Crumb & Kettle could make 5 image pins per post on its main blog and leave out the category "Kitchen basics" there only.
Good to know
- Rules apply when a post's pins are made. Changing them does not remake or remove pins already made.
- Generate pins on the Posts screen still makes image pins for a post when the rules make none by themselves. It uses the rules' image count, or 3 when that is 0.
- Owners, admins and editors can change pin rules and turn a post's pins off and on. Everyone else sees them read-only. See Roles and permissions.
- The Settings page sums up your rules, for example "Both · 3 images and 1 video a post · 2 rules".
- To stop only the fresh pins Bloomtack makes for older posts, use Pause fresh pins instead. See Pin history and fresh pins.
