Focus keywords

What a post's focus keyword does for its pins, where Bloomtack gets it, and how to add one.

A focus keyword is the search phrase a post should be found for, such as "no knead sourdough". Pinterest is a search engine, so pins that use the words people search for get shown more often.

What Bloomtack does with it

  • Uses it in the pin title and in headlines on the pin image.
  • Uses it once, naturally, in the pin description.
  • Uses it when it looks for stock photos that match the post.

A post without a keyword still gets pins. Bloomtack then works from the post's title and headings.

Where keywords come from

See a post's keyword

Go to Posts: each post's row shows "Keyword: ..." or "No focus keyword". You can also go to Blogs, open your blog and stay on the Posts tab, where each post shows "Keyword: ..." or "No focus keyword yet".

Add or change a keyword

On Posts, press Add keyword (or Edit keyword) on the post's row, type the keyword and press Save. Bloomtack says "Keyword saved. New pins use it." Owners, admins and editors can do this. A keyword you set here is kept when the post is imported or synced again, and pins made from then on use it. Empty the field and save to remove it.

You can also import the post again by address with the keyword after a comma, for example:

https://crumbandkettle.com/french-onion-soup, french onion soup

The post is updated, not added twice. To give a post extra keywords, each with a pin of its own, see Add keywords for many posts at once.

On a blog connected with the WordPress plugin, the plugin sends the keyword from your SEO plugin each time you update the post, unless you changed it on Posts.

Choosing good keywords

  • Use the phrase a reader would type: "pumpkin bread", not "my favourite autumn loaf".
  • Two to four words work best.
  • One keyword per post. Different posts should target different keywords.
